Filling in the chromatic spaces in scales and modes

A common musical question that guitarists often discuss is “How can we use outside chromatic tones logically and effectively?”

This article details one possible answer to this question.

Essentially, you can take any three notes-per-string diatonic scale fingering (for example, 'A Ionian'):

E |--------------------------------7-9-10-|
B |-------------------------7-9-10--------|
G |-------------------6-7-9---------------|
D |-------------6-7-9---------------------|
A |-------5-7-9---------------------------|
E |-5-7-9---------------------------------|

and simply add your unused fingers to the scale pattern, creating an altered diatonic scale with chromatic passing tones:

E |------------------------------------------7-8-9-10-|
B |---------------------------------7-8-9-10----------|
G |-------------------------6-7-8-9-------------------|
D |-----------------6-7-8-9---------------------------|
A |---------5-7-8-9-----------------------------------|
E |-5-7-8-9-------------------------------------------|

You can use this altered scale to create sequences and melodies just like any other scale. The following is a basic 4-note sequence:

E ||------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B ||------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G ||------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D ||-----------------------------------------------6-----6-7--6-7-8-6-7-8-9-|
A ||---------------5-----5-7---5-7-8-5-7-8-9-7-8-9---8-9----9---------------|
E ||-5-7-8-9-7-8-9---8-9-----9----------------------------------------------|

E |------------------------------------------------------------------------7-|
B |---------------------------------------7----7-8---7-8-9-7-8-9-10-8-9-10---|
G |-------6-----6-7---6-7-8-6-7-8-9-7-8-9---8-9----9-------------------------|
D |-7-8-9---8-9-----9--------------------------------------------------------|
A |--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E |--------------------------------------------------------------------------|

E |-----7-8----7-8-9-7-8-9-10-12-11-10-9-10-9-8-7-9-8-7----8-7------7-------|
B |9-10-----10------------------------------------------10-----10-9---10-9-8|
G |-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D |-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------------------------------------------------|

E |--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B |-10-9-8-7-9-8-7---8-7-----7-----------------------------------------------|
G |----------------9-----9-8---9-8-7-9-8-7-6-8-7-6---7-6-----6---------------|
D |------------------------------------------------9-----9-8---9-8-7-9-8-7-6-|
